About Guyana

Nestled on the north-eastern shoulder of South America, Guyana’s unspoilt beauty, unique cultural heritage and natural attractions make it an ideal destination for tourists. Our beautiful ‘Land of Many Water’ is a tropical paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Guyana is the only official English-speaking country in South America, known for its pristine Amazonian rainforests, thundering waterfalls, exotic wildlife, rich cultural heritage, and a vibrant indigenous culture.

With more than 80% of untouched rainforest, Guyana is one of the countries with the highest biodiversity in the world. Our ‘green gold’ not only represents a home to our indigenous peoples and a rich natural resource, but a global asset to address climate change.

Guyana boasts one of the world’s largest single drop waterfalls, the famous Kaieteur Falls, a natural wonder in itself with a total drop of 822 feet, approximately five times the height of Niagara Falls. Highly regarded as one of the top birding destinations, Guyana boasts more than 868 species of birds from 72 different families. Visitors to Guyana may engage in bird watching, wildlife spotting, trekking, sport fishing, or explore our picturesque capital city.

Georgetown, the capital, is also known as “The Garden City”, a reflection of the tree-lined avenues for which it is well known. Georgetown is also famous for the architecture of its numerous wooden mansions, canals and dykes, a memory of the country’s English and Dutch colonial past.

Often referred to as the “Land of Six Peoples”, Guyana’s history has provided a melting pot of cultural diversity with peoples of Asian (India), African, European, Portuguese, Chinese and Amerindian descent. There are nine different Amerindian groups in Guyana, each with its own unique language, culture and customs. Guyanese culture-music, cuisine, architecture, religion-reflects this wonderful blend of diverse groups. Favourite dishes in Guyana are Pepper Pot (Amerindian), Metagee (African) and Madras and Bunjal curries (East Indian).

We are slice of the Caribbean on the edge of South America-our natural environment a part of the South American landscape of tropical forests and savannah lands, and our culture distinctly Caribbean. Visit Guyana for unspoilt nature, exciting culture, and a warm and friendly people. We look forward to welcoming you to this wonderful, unspoilt and undiscovered treasure in South America.
